Amazon and Microsoft also offer relational databases as a service, though with their own proprietary technology tied to their to their own proprietary clouds. Oracle, Microsoft and IBM are the leaders in the relational database market, but are locked into their legacy business models and technology choices.
Product Description
FathomDB offers relational databases-as-a-service. We're using the move to the cloud to change how databases are run: pay-as-you-go pricing, automated monitoring and backups, and best practices out of the box. Standard relational databases, such as MySQL, mean no barriers to adoption. But compatibility means we inherit the limitations of relational databases: pricing based on capacity, not usage, and no real-time capacity adjustment. FathomDB already eases these problems, but we're solving these problems forever with our DEMO announcement.
Market Opportunity
Relational database server software is a $15 billion industry (Gartner); cloud services will grow from $16 billion in 2008 to $42 billion in 2012 (IDC).
