Boston-Power, Inc.'s (DEMO 07) first battery of its proprietary lithium-ion technology platform, Sonata ® , is now for sale and available for evaluation testing by computer makers and other electronics manaufacturers.
A new type of lithium-ion battery, Sonata enables embedded batteries in devices, which hasn't been an option before. The integration promises to reduce overall device cost, improve safety, and increase reliability, the Westborough, MA start-up said.
Tests show Sonata will last the lifespan of a mobile computer - on average three years - without losting any capacity because Boston-Power has fine-tuned the battery's electrochemical interactions. Sonata charges to 80% capacity in 30 minutes versus two hours for other batteries.
Although Boston-Power's Sonata battery is targeted for mobile computers, the company's road map calls for developing higher-energy-density batteries to power emerging applications.
The company has raised $68.6 million in three rounds of venture funding.
