A Green(er) DEMO
Face it: A production the size and scale of DEMO, even the more modest scale of DEMO 09, leaves a pretty big carbon footprint. This year, DEMO is taking steps to reduce, reuse and reclaim. You’ll notice it in the reduction of printed material and the recycled materials in the attendee bag.And thanks to eFormic, DEMO is offsetting 1,000 tons of CO2 emissions, enough to cover the production of the event, the travel of the demonstrating class and then some.

Meet three young entrepreneurs who are changing the world, and quite possibly the face of business.

The Life You Save
David Jacobs understands all too well the challenges of kidney donor matching. After a complicated and time-consuming search to match donor pairs, Jacobs developed an efficient matching algorithm that clinics are now using to find best matches. The software has already saved a handful of lives and is destined to profoundly impact the organ transplant process.

These three conversations — moderated by VentureBeat founder Matt Marshall — explore and focus our attention on emerging innovations that will change the landscape.

New tools bringing more energy efficiency
One of the most vital issues facing the world is the need to reduce carbon emissions. One way is to be smart about creating energy efficiencies, and the upside to this is the potential for more jobs. Smart energy metering companies, together with smarter buildings and smart materials are leading the way as we move towards a more sustainable economy. This panel seeks to bring together some of the sharpest minds in the cleantech industry for a preview of some of the most brilliant energy efficiency inventions now in the works.

How sharing social data across the Web will change lives and business
Major players such as Google, MySpace and Facebook are rolling out ways for other Web sites to access their user data. Such data, including status updates and other real-time information, promise to become increasingly important for consumers and businesses. Already, companies are using real-time information to respond to customer complaints. Younger players such as Twitter have grabbed increasing buzz in this area, and the corporate world is taking a closer look at how they can incorporate these feeds and other data into how they work. The point of this panel is to explore what projects are in the works, what opportunities are being created, and what this will mean for consumer and business life over the next three years. It will also explore how industry-wide efforts to create standards for sharing user data are helping or not.
Panelists:
Max Engel, Product Lead, MySpaceID
Kevin Marks, Developer Advocate, Google
Dave Morin, Senior Platform Manager, Facebook
Joseph Smarr, Chief Platform Architect, Plaxo

Productivity 2.0: How new tools are making people more productive
A mix of Web and social media technologies are making people more productive. Social networking, wikis, online collaboration, and ondemand software are combining in new ways and being adapted to the work environment, but also to individuals’ private lives. More dynamic operating systems are creating smart phones that can keep people tethered together to their other devices, workplaces and colleagues in ways not seen until now. This panel highlights companies that are leveraging this technology and pushing productivity to new heights.
Panelists:
Jeff Pierce, Manager, Mobile Computing Research Group, IBM Research Almaden
Raju Vegesna, Evangelist, Zoho
