Consumer Software and Services
Funding
Propel is privately funded and profitable. The company has raised three rounds of financing since its founding in 1999 by a team led by Steve Kirsch and David Murray.
Competitors
No direct competitors. Propel PBM’s end-user orientation and architecture complements existing bandwidth management solutions, which are designed for use by network administrators and IT professionals, and which operate on networking devices that are unable to provide the unique benefits delivered by PBM.
Product Description
Propel® PBM™ software is the first application providing personal bandwidth management for individual PC users. Propel PBM automatically optimizes and prioritizes network access for time-sensitive applications, improving the performance of VoIP, video conferencing and online games. A subscription service provides updated traffic shaping policies, protecting high-priority applications like Skype against current and new software. PBM’s personal bandwidth monitor displays bandwidth utilization in real-time, enabling users to detect and control excessive use, rogue and zombie software.
Market Opportunity
Propel PBM is targeted at a rapidly growing market comprised of individual users of time-sensitive network applications. One example, Skype, has more than 500 million downloads. eBay reported 220 million registered users, and 30 million small business users. Propel plans to adapt PBM to address enterprise and service provider markets.
DEMO Says
Large organizations understand and manage quality of service in their network operations to insure priority applications run smoothly. With today’s desktops laden with applications all seeking access to the broadband connection, how do you manage quality of service at the consumer desktop? Enter Propel Software. Or is that “re-enter?” After a tough start in 2000, the company gained expertise in connection acceleration and management for ISPs including Earthlink. That expertise is the foundation for this personal bandwidth manager that insures that desktop applications work and play well together, seamlessly and invisibly to the consumer.
