Internet FAQs

Will the conference network be fast enough for our company to demonstrate our products and services?

Please keep in mind this is a shared Internet connection and is not designed for high bandwidth streaming media or constant downloading of large files. The internet connection is to be equally accessible to each participating demonstrator.  It will be monitored throughout the event to ensure equal access to all.  The network is designed for typical Web browsing and network activities.  Although DEMO strives to ensure equal access, the typical internet experience during the event is 512k (1/3 the speed of a T-1 line). As utilization varies, actual experience may vary.

How do I order a phone line or additional power (above 10 amps) for my demonstrator station?
You can order your phone line directly from the Sheraton San Diego Hotel & Marina. Please contact Jackie DiPerna at 619-501-6378 to obtain the hotel order form. Additional power (in addition to the 10 amps already included in your demonstrator package) can be ordered through Freeman.
What do I get in my demonstrator station with the provided Internet connection?
The Demonstrator Pavilion will access the Internet through a partial DS3 connection. Each demonstrator station will be provided one (1) RJ-45 connection for a single computer or NAT router hookup. Onsite, basic connectivity is provided via a NAT routed DHCP address. A single static address can be made available if you choose to connect a router in order to access more then 1 connection (device). Your device should have an RJ-45 jack on it. If your laptop requires a dongle make sure to bring one to the conference.
What if I need to connect to more than one device in the pavilion?
You need to supply your own ethernet switch and patch cords. If you prefer to have a private network it is advisable to bring a router. If you have any questions about this please contact Bill Fluharty with PSAV at 619.692.2296 or wfluharty@psav.com. PSAV will also be renting out certain items for internet access needs although we still recommend bringing your own equipment if possible. But if that is not an option, you will be able to rent the following items. Please send a request to Bill Fluharty to place your order or with any questions. Make sure to include your demonstrator company name and station # with your request. Devices will be distributed during pavilion set up on September 21 between 1:00 - 5:00pm. All other equipment (monitors etc.) will still be available for rent through SmartSource AV Rentals.
  • 8 Port FastEthernet switch $25 (credit card authorization for $100 as deposit)
  • 10' Cat5e ethernet patch cables $5 (credit card authorization for $10 as deposit)
Will the IP addresses be static or dynamic?
The IP addresses in the Pavilion will be dynamic by default, static addresses can be made available upon request onsite at the conference.
Can I connect a network address translation (NAT) server or DHCP server to the show network provided to my station?
Yes, this is highly recomended. You are encouraged to bring a switch and patch cords should you wish to connect more than 1 computer to the network in the pavilion. If you prefer to have a private network it is advisable to bring a router. Please let PSAV know if you are planning on bringing a NAT router.
Can I use wireless at my demonstrator station?
Yes. If your plan to use wireless, your product is directly related to wireless, or it requires an access point to demonstrate effectively, please make sure to contact PSAV as soon as possible to let them know.
Will there be any ports/services blocked that could cause a problem with connecting to computers outside of the show network?
No, nothing will be blocked onsite during the conference.
How do I get help setting up the connection at my demonstrator station?
You will need to test all equipment/internet access at your station in the pavilion during set up on September 21 between 1:00-5:00 pm. PSAV will make every effort to meet with any demonstrators experiencing issues during that time. Please make sure that you understand how to configure networking on your equipment before arriving onsite. If you are having trouble with your connection and suspect that it is the network cable, please go to the DEMO Pavilion Service Desk, and a network technician will be dispatched to your station. Please verify your network connection as soon as possible to avoid last-minute problems.
What if I get onsite and need to connect more devices than originally planned?
If additional equipment (computers, monitors etc.) is needed on site, please check with SmartSource, the preferred DEMO equipment rental provider. If they do not have what you need, you can also check with the nearest electronics store in the San Diego area (BestBuy, Circuit City, Staples etc.).

You will also need to request additional IP addresses/switches/cables for those devices with PSAV.
If I am bringing my own computer, what mandatory steps should I take before I arrive at DEMO?
  • Make sure your computer has the latest software patches installed. Very Important
  • Make sure your virus detection software is up-to-date. Very Important.
  • Understand that connections to the Internet will be on a public network with many different users and computing platforms. Some of those systems may be infected with worms and viruses. Very Important
What steps has DEMO taken to protect the conference network?
  • Network traffic in the DEMO Pavilion may be separated onto different networks to help isolate any potential problems.
  • Some network ports and services known to be used by potentially dangerous applications may be blocked to keep these applications from infecting computers on the network. Blocking these ports may affect certain types of connections back to your corporate network.
  • We reserve the right to deny network access to any machine that degrades overall network performance or attempts to spread viruses, worms, Trojan horses, and the like.
Whom should I contact if I have internet access questions?
If you have questions about internet connectivity before the conference, the best way to contact PSAV staff via email is at wfluharty@psav.com or phone at 619.692.2296. During the conference, you can go to the DEMO Pavilion Service Desk in the Pavilion.
